Factory Power Antenna to Standard?

I looked and found many threads relating to swapping in a power antenna to a standard antenna car but I was wondering if anyone had done the exact opposite and if it was fairly straightforward or not.

I was looking into doing this because I have a couple standard antennas and all the parts I would likely need on another car and the power antenna is not a huge deal to me personally so Idk if I want to go thru trying to fix mine.

Any help is appreciated

Re: Factory Power Antenna to Standard?

So you want to go fixed mast antenna to power retractible?

It is straight forward... Parts and wiring.
1) an antenna bezel socket makes it easier, and less likely to scratch the paint when the two screwdriver slip off.
2) pull the plastic fender liner and you'll have sufficient access to the support bolt and back side wiring.
3) pull the hush panel and kick panel to get at the interior wiring.
4) You'll have to pull the radio to R&R the antenna cable
5) The factory power relay is on the top side of the dash panel's bottom lip. It's a real **** to deal with as you are working blind, and there's not much room... to find how to release the wiring clip, and accessing the bolt(s) mounting the relay.

Re: Factory Power Antenna to Standard?

I removed the power antenna from my 87, and replaced it with a fixed mast antenna . It is as easy as it sounds. For me, the hardest part was finding the parts.

A specialized socket will make the job easier... $8 for a Sunex 392106 from Summit

My comments in post #2 still apply, with #5 changing to: You can leave the factory relay in place because it is a PITA. Disconnect or cut wires as appropriate based on whether you think you may every want power back, or can resell it to someone who does, and how OCD you are to have that old really still just sitting there.

Okay thanks, if it turns out to be pretty simple I'll probably just swap it out for now.

Re: Factory Power Antenna to Standard?

I wanted to throw it out there for anyone in the same boat as me, I swapped the power antenna out and it was super simple, hardest part was getting the motor around the fender vent.

Thanks for the help MoJoe
