Sub placement...rear seats vs rear hatch

I am putting two Cerwin Vega 124's in my car and am pulling the back seat for the box/cabinent I am working on. I have read that the subs will hit harder in the rear well. Is this do to the hatch window? Is this legit, or just an idea. I am not looking for the loudest system and was thinking that you would feel the subs more in the back seat area. I am not looking to win a dB competition, just be able to feel it, a lot....all ideas welcome.

i know from experiance that the rear glass helps the bass. i had a Vega-104 (10" 4ohm) hooked up to a 150watt jensen amp in my '79 corvette, and it beat my friends '89 mustang with 700watts flowing to 2 12" RF punches (i think they were punches) and my sisters 2 12" Kickers that had 500 watts from a pioneere premiere going to em(i forget which model amp and subs but they were top of the line in '97). another thing that helped me was that the sub is about 1.5 feet away from you, but it hit damn hard and hurt our heads at 150 watts. i know the hatch glass (Vette dosent really have a hatch, but same style glass) helped because if i droped a baseball, or wrench, or anything heavy, it boomed, rather than a regular plunk.

The Vega 124's are 12" and I will be puushing them with a Rockford Fosgate 800a2. It is my understanding that since I will be running them bridgedn mono, they will be getting 1/2 of the 1180Wrms it is rated at. They will be very load at eithor location but am wondering which wouyld feel better

it all depends on what kind of bass you want. face it to the back it booms louder and you feel more but is not as acurate sounding due to vibrations. if you face them foward or up they are more acurate but not as loud. you can also hear any little distortion that comes through the sub where as facing backwards some minor distortions it's harder to hear. my 12" kicker solobaric faces backwards and it hits harder than most systems with 2 12's but it rattles more too.

Yes placing the woofers in the hatch does create a louder effect then placing them behind the front seats mostly because of the time it takes for the sound wave to "mature". 9177 was on the right track with facing them bacwards to make it louder. Although it does tend to seperate the bass from the mids and highs more becuase of the time it takes the bass wave to reach your ears versus the time it takes for the mid/high waves to reach your ears. This can be compinsated for but this requries complicated timing devices. It's not a large differance but it can be noticiable at times. But back to the question. The hatch area will give you more distance for the wave to mature because not only does it have to go from the back of the car to the front but it also has to reflect off the hatch glass. This is why hatchbacks are so idealy suited for dbDrag compitions. Hope this helped

Here is somthing to think about, once you find where you want to put your box, it is not set in stone, you can move it so easy, And if your thinking about bolting it down, be carfull because your fuel tank is right there below the frame.

The glass gives you "cabain gain" the sound has to travel less giving you amplified sound. It is like having both a sealed unit and bandpass. I have to POLK DB 12 in a sealed in my GTA and if you listen to the system with the hatch open the bass is drastically decreased. I used to install at Circuit City , and you would be amazed the at difference in sound between idenical systems just by where the subs are. The subs are for sale if any one is interested....Email me at JBlown305tpi@aol.com
