Convertible Owners....I need help!!!!

ok here is my dilema, I have a 1990 iroc convertible. The previous owner took his stereo system with him so I got yhe car without a radio and rear speakers.I was under the impression that 6x9 spekers were the size to get for the rear so I purchased a set of JBLs. They fit properly onto the interior sid e panel, I'm using the OEM speaker grilles, the studs from the grilles alinged properly with the holes in the speaker frame, everything bolted up properly. Here is the problem, I can't get the side panel back into place. The new spekers won't clear the support member that runs behind the panel. The speaker appears to be too thick(Speaker magnet hits the support). So my question is did I buy the proper speaker size for this car?Not knowing much about car audio I assumed that any 6x9 would fit, or do I have the wrong speaker size?

looks like you are going to have to get some with less depth to them..

how did you get the rear panels off? i tried once on mine and they just didn't want to come off.. so i just spent the speaker money on beer..

Having just went through this...
From the factory verts were cursed with some 5" round junkers. These were mounted to a flat plate that was mounted to the studs you speak of from the grille. That the studs line up perfectly with 6x9s prolly means that they were a readily available grille that ASC scooped up to use in the verts.
I have cerwin vega 6x9s in there now. As tight a fit as humanly possible. So tight that my trim panels are pushed out a good half inch to accomodate. How did i mount them? I didn't, i have them sitting on an angle in the hole, held in place by the pressure from the trim panel. It works fine, no rattles. My only complaint is the trim panels are pushed out, and thus i am selling my speakers to get some nice 6.5"s that are also a little shallower.
My cerwin vegas ss-2693s were a pretty low profile 6x9, try comparing the depth of yours to that listed on crutchfield for mine (sorry, don't have time to check) If yours are any taller than mine i don't think you could squeeze them in no matter how hard you try.
Above all DO NOT CUT UP OR EVEN DRILL THE REAR TRIM PANELS TO MAKE THEM FIT. Sorry for yelling, but i'd hate to see the rarest of all thirdgen trim panels destroyed to install speakers. Much better to purchase something that fits better.

When I had my stero done the stock speaker location was too small for a 6x9 to fit normal. My friend built a special plate to fit on the outside of the whole. It holds 4',6" and tweeter. Like the post above said they wont fit exact. Maybe you could make a spacer for the speaker to move it out a little.
