Can I do this?

I have my 12" Kickers mounted on a cheesy board that goes over the well in the back of the hatch. I know that's not the best set up but hey, more money to put under the hood. Anyway, if I were to mount my amps on the underside of that board, for a nice clean look in the hatch area, would there still be sufficient air flow to cool the amps?
Guess it would help if I told you what kind of amps...I got a POS LA Sound pushin the 6X9's (not worried about this one, I've NEVER seen it get hot at all). And bridged across the subs is the Alpine V12. That's the one I'm concerned about.
So, any problems with doing this?

I'm not sure if it would work or not, but I've always been told not to mount amps upside down because heat rises and the amps won't be able to cool, because the heat will just be going right back up into them.

Good point....didn't think of that. What if I mounted them on the floor of the well? Would there be enough air flow to cool them?

You are totally right about mounting them upside down. All it will do is eventually fry your amps. If you want to mount it in the bottom of the trunk I would at least put cheap clooling fans on them that blow air across the heat sink. There isn't a lot of air movement but some amps don't get that hot anyway. How hot do they get now?

i wouldnt be to worried about the V12, its a good amp. Maybe if you lowered the impedance a bit it wouldnt get so hot. The guy who mentioned the cooling fans has a point, it would work but let us not forget the air thats being pushed by the subs? would that even work? haha

You'll get more output from a single 10" in a box/tube than you will from 2 12s on a plate. It'll also weigh less and take up less space.

There is not much movement of air from the subs. The fans blow across the face of the amp and circulate the air. The subs don't cause much circulation....I am just talking form my experience so you do what you want!

I have a RF 500x1 and a Infinity Kappa 600x1 mounted in the bottom of my storage area and the heat is not a problem. However i don't have a box covering them up.

i've always heard that as long as the amp has fans in it u can put them in enclosed spots. As far as mounting it up side down, dont really know what that could do to the amp.

You must also take into consideration that the space the amps are going to be in is enclosed. There won't be any fresh cool air being exchanged. Once the air inside there gets hot, the fans will only be blowing the same hot air across the amps. But on the other hand, you may never have a problem by doing this. Just my .02 worth.
