how can i get my system to sound better, or is it just the car?

ok, here is my system in my 91 rs convertible. i have a pioneer 8200 head unit, pioneer 4x6 component plate speakers in the dash, 6.5 pioneer mids with the horn thing with a 1" tweeter in the kicks from DJ, the horn 6x9's pioneers in the back, and a kicker 12 L7 in the trunk being ran from an audiobahn 1200 watt amp. i think i have all the goodies i need, but it just don't soud as good as my coupe camaro with 2 pioneer 15's being pushed by a pioneer 800 watt amp, the pioneer 8200 deck, pioneer 6x9's and the factory 4x6's in the dash. is it just being a convertible, you can't have a clean good sounding system? not to mention the trunk in the cnvt rattles like all hell. i'm hopeing dynamat will help with this.

First off, several problems.

1. A hatchback has the hatch to act like a horn, so you got EASY spl coming out of it. If you compare it to any similar car with a trunk, the F-body, Integra, and other hatchbacks just have an advantage right off the bat.

2. The cabin of the car reinforces the bass as well. In technical terms, you are sitting in a big woofer enclosure, with a woofer in a much smaller box firing into it. Lose the roof and all of a sudden there is nothing keeping the bass in. Kind of like trying to get your home stereo loud. The bigger it is, the more it takes to get loud.

3. Comparing 2 15" to 1 12" even if its square just isn't fair. You have around three times as much cone area, so of course you are going to get louder.

4. Convertibles are notorious for rattles because of all the fun stuff involved in the top. Add that to the fact you have cowl shake and you can see why it might have rattles.

Do you have all your speakers amped, or just your sub? If you're currently running your speakers off of the head unit, a nice amplifier would help them out alot. Also I would have either chosen dash speakers or kicks, not both. But since you already bought them, you might as well use them I guess. I nice set of components instead of coaxials would probably sound better in the kicks too.

thanks for your responses guys. about the dash and kicks, i had the dash ones in first, then added the kicks, but if having them both together isn't good, i could always put the dash ones in my coupe being i still have the factory ones in there. no, no amp on the other speakers. i guess you're right about comparing the 2 15's to the one 12, but for all the talk about them, i expected alot more i think.

Definatly consider putting an amp on all your speakers. It makes a huge difference. Also what exactly do you have in the kicks? A coaxial plus another tweeter? Just a good simple component system often sounds better than a bunch of speakers everywhere.

Hey,
I have a 91 RS Convertible with a Nakamichi CD-35z, Infinity Kappa 4x6, Infinity Kappa 5 1/4" and a Fosgate 12" sub powered with a 200 watt amp in the trunk.
Mine sounds great and I have plenty of bass!
I'm going to swap out the sub with a Infinity Basslink sub so I can regain some trunk space back.
Have not bought the sub as of yet.

The only rattle I get from the rear is the license plate frame.

I'm thinking your sub box might be too small.
My sub box fills the entire bottom of the trunk all the way up to package shelf area.
When I crank it up the entire car shakes and with the sub box being so low in the car, you can really feel the bass when you are sitting inside.

We do lose some bass with the top down going 60mph, but that is to be expected.

Also, my sub is mounted to face the rear of the car.

I'd like to have a tad more power, but all in all I've got just over $400 into my system and I'm very pleased with it.

Sounds to me you have plenty of power pushing the sub.
But it's all in the box design when it comes to boom. Small box will greatly deplete the amount of boom no matter how much power you have going to it.
Check the specs on your sub and see what kind of cubic feet the sub is desinged for.
