4 sets of componets or 2sets ans 6x9's
Wazup, I was thinking about running some good componet speakers in custom Kick Panels and 6x9's for the Mid Range.. But I was just Curious if anyone has 4 sets of Componets in their 3rd gen. I know I would have to make some Custom mounting Plates for these. But I want to know If I would just be waisting my time...and MONEY by mounting this extra set of componets???? I'm Trying to go for crisp clean sound. I really don't like the Stock Mounting plates of the 6x9's they like to rattle.
I'm basically having the same problem that you are. I've ordered kicks from DJ Sexay and plan to throw in a pair of 6.5" components, but my rear speakers are only 6x9's. The way I see it, the only way to attain a smooth and consistant level of sound quality is to make sure that all of the speakers are of roughly the same quality. My upgraded 6x9's were fine when I was running high quality 4x6's in the front, but the 6.5" comps will completely outshine them. This may make the sound coming from the rear seem inferior (and if you already dislike them due to the rattle, the clarity of components will only make it more obvious).
Long story short, I'd get components for the rear as well. They'll compliment the system much better. I can't afford to yet, but one day...

Other side of that story is don't bother... the rear speakers are for fill mostly, so you don't need to have near as expensive/high quality, etc speakers in the back. If you look at a lot of the SQ guys they have either no rear speakers or a set that only does midrange.
If I remember right, Jim doesn't even have rear speakers in his IROC.

So are you saying that with the right equipment you can run just Componets and Subs? It Seems like the kick pannel speakers sound wouldn't be satisfaying enough for me. I put a-lot of question into this b/c I am about to buy a Better Amp For my front and rear speakers. If Just Componets and Subs sounds crisp in the interior I can Then spend the money on a Badass 2 channel amp rather than an above average 4 channel amp.
I dunno. True, the rear speakers are mainly there to fill a void, but I wouldn't right them off too quickly. Buy your kickpanel components first (since you sound like you're going to buy them either way), run them off your existing amp with your 6x9's and then without, and see if you are satisfied with either of the results. That's the only way to know for sure.
I would definately keep your rear speakers if you want natural sound. Those speakers will recreate ambient sound (rear fill) that you would normally get from stereo speakers in a big room. Competition systems, to my ears, are designed more for dry acuracy than realistic sound. If you want to get hi-tech, you would optimize the rear sound by bandpassing the frequencies between 250-2500 hz or so; eliminating low lows and high highs mimics reflected sound. You could also pass the signal through a delay to create a bigger "room" than the car's actual space.
I would go with a quality set of 6 1/2" coax's (since you don't need the super high quality of components for the rear) made by the same company as your front speakers to keep the sound quality uniform.

It's purely personal preference. Some people prefer to get that "surround" effect, where I prefer to re-create a more accurate soundstage up front, which is in most cases prohibitive when rear speakers are used. In general, if you plan a certain budget, spending it on 1 pair of speakers instead of 2 will give you much higher quality speakers. For the sake of rear fill, the stock 6x9s are adequate, so I'd put the money into the fronts.

I agree with AmorgetRS. The front speakers are the most important speakers. Some people put a 4" comp. set in the dash or use kicks and then, in place of the 6x9's, put a midrange to get the fill. Then you can stick a set of tweeters in the hatch along with the subs. By placing the tweets in the back you can hear both R & L sides and you won't leave the car with a ring in you left ear.

a question to this topic:
everyones always saying how rear speakers are just for fill etc..
But...how can you get a good "soundstage" from front speakers that are down in the kickpanel when your leg (or passengers legs) are always blocking the way???
I've never understood this.
