"Factory Reconditioned" Components: bad idea?

I know buying refurbished, repaired equipment is often a mistake. Does the same go for "factory reconditioned" stuff? Theoretically, the reconditioned equipment has to pass the same factory standards that regular equipment does in order to be dtermined acceptable, but would I still be walking into a bad situation?

Let me put it this way: RadioShack would be a better plan. Considering you can pick up 4x6 and 6x9 aftermarket kenwoods for like $40 for all 4, why not!

Depends who does it. Some companies do it themselves, so supposedly they go through the same type of quality control the regular new stuff does, but its cosmetically ugly.

Others just sell all the broken stuff, and someone outside of the company does it. Those I would avoid.

I bought a factory reconditioned Soundstream amp from Circuit City a year ago. It worked great until i dropped the damn thing!! Sound City then decided to take me for a ride...long story. I will never buy anything from there again.

Here's the thing: the item in question is a decent set of Orion component speakers, otherwise I wouldn't bother considering them. The place that is selling them says that they bought them from Orion in "factory reconditioned" shape. According to the store, this means that they were "reconditioned" by Orion's own people and that they had to pass regular Orion quality standards in order to be sold at all. As well, they come with a 90 day warranty from Orion or the store. I'm optimistic but skeptical, so any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can get some pretty good deals on refurbished stuff. It all depends on the price versus your acceptable risk level.

However, I wouldn't recommend refurbished speakers unless it was at one heck of a discount
