What the hell is "ERS"?
I was looking around in my Camaro the other day and noticed a little badge on the dash that says "ERS" and under the big ERS letters it says "extended range sound system". I get the general idea, but what exactly was it, 'cause it sure as hell isn't there anymore! Was it just a more powerful head unit, or did it have factory amps, or what?

well, in my camaro that had the ERS, it had more powerful 6x9's and they had tweeters. Put still had the same ol 4x6 fronts, and the head unit was the same
that was in my convertible.....some one put pioneer speakers all the way around and a JVC deck.....REALLY SUCKED. Now i have the 1995 Alpine deck , with a 4 way amp and Kappa CMMD speakers in the front and CMMD 6x9s from teh 87 in a box till i get some 6.5 or 5.25.
Mine has that.... dosen't sound that extended range to me. I guess it IS 13 years old though, not to mention things weren't quite like they are now when it comes to sound. I need some new speakers... but other things have gotta come first.... like getting the car to stop burning oil.

Must mean that G.M./Delco used thicker paper in their wizzer cone tweeters. ERS What a joke. It was a way to charge an extra $500.00 for that option and have an investment of $2.00 on their part. "Ejected Rapidy Speakers", after I bought my Z!

My car had the ERS system too. I figured it just meant that there were speakers in the sail panels hence the "extended range" of the sound.

if i recall correctly the balance was different, i think the front right would be crossed with the rear left and the front left with the rear right.

I think it means that you get the whizzer thing on the rear speakers like someone mentioned above. Although the one Camaro I saw without the emblem had no rear speakers... no holes for them or cloth panels there.... just nothing.
And how come my friend's 88 Buick has all stock stuff, yet sounds amazing???

Holy $%!@ someone brought this thread back from the dead! Well, the previous owner gave me the stock head unit...it wasn't in the car but he gave it to me, and I see now ERS on mine. Must have been earlier 3rdgens. Come to think of it I've never seen a 3rdgen still using the stock head-unit.....I wonder why.....

I have that and when I took out the rear speakers there was some insulotion in the body cavity that was molded for the speaker may that has something to do with it or not.

the system was day and night "back in the day". i have had that in one of my irocs and one of my other did not. the magnets on the ers are twice the size and have better drivers. think the ers sound like crap, hear the normal speakers.

Mine had the "ERS" also. When I took it apart (because it sounded so bad) It had the 4x6 up in the dash, 4x6 in the back with a 4" Bostwick bass cone enclosed in a type of bass box with a long tube down the back. I tossed the bass units because it sounded so bad. I have a bass switch on the dash with a gain slide bar also. I think it hooks to a small bass amp under the dash. I have followed the wires to a box about 3 inches across. It can't possibly put out more than 20 watts max.
I have a Kenwood bass box with mid range and tweeters that seems to work well with the stock unit. I will put in a small amp later that I hope to work off of the stock dash switch.

You have a Firebird right? I'm not sure what models that came in, but it is an interesting option, huh? Too bad it didn't sound better.. or at least as good as the 6x9 setup
