holding down subbox?
holding down subbox?
i just installed a 10 inch subwoofer in my 85 camaro. its right behind the seats on the higher end of the trunk, not in the well. i was thinking of securing it with shelving brackets, but i'm afraid to drill there because the gas tank is right under it. has anyone done this before or happen to know how far down the tank is. im sure i'd be fine if i used small screws, but i dont want to take chances. Thank you so much!

I wouldn't really worry about it. I'm sure it'll get stolen before anything else happens to it.
Seriously... that is NOT a good place for a sub. Nothing you do is going to keep it from flying forward in a high speed accident and rearranging the back of your skull, and it's a horribly obvious attraction for thieves.

I agree with Jim, this is a horrible place to mount a sub, even a 25mph accident will send a 30# box right at your head, never mind the theft factor. Not to mention that while low frequency sounds tend to be hard to localize, this mounting position would push that fact to it's limits and be very difficult to get good soundstaging from. Given all these facts, I would look to the rear well area with the sub firing up. You will get fine results. A few more dB isn't worth risking your life for.

thanks for all your input. i originally wanted to mount it in the well, but the power cable is a few feet short. i didn't want to be splicing any huge wires, especially the most crucial one. i guess i could get some good connectors and go with a few more feet of wire. if any one has suggestions on how to do a good job with that i'd love to hear it. if not, thanks for all your constructive criticism (ha ha)! I did fully black out the hatch with limo tint though, so you can't even see inside at all, that was my plan to avoid theft, i'm not just gonna leave it there for all to see. but thanks anyway.

i put my subs behind my seat, not in the well. i havent had any problems with them moving around at all. they stay just fine, im guessing the carptet on carpet w/ all the weight is holding them there, and i drive my car hard... turns real fast, exc.. i also blacked out my rear window... along w/ the two sides... tickets suck but oh well. the hatch dosent look blacked out in the pic but thats cause its bright out and its open, look in my readers rides from my sig and you can see how dark it it. here is a couple pics if they work
this second one was me attempting to fit a third woofer back there but it was unsucessful... the only other place i could put it is in the back seat so i just took it out... i just wanted to see if i could hook up two amps and make it work... and i did yay..
here are the amps

No one has any problems with them moving around until u get into that head on collision, like Jim said... I had 2 12's in the well and 2 12's up on the deck.... Was kruzen down Main St when a dumb bitch pulled out infront of me and just stared... It was raining out and I couldnt stop... She pulled out within 10 feet of my car as I was proceeding at 80km, or alittle over... I smashed into her, put her up on a curb, she hit 3 cars, slid across 4 front lawns and finally landing into a front deck.... My car just buckled in the front end, I wouldnt have been injured at all, but my ****in sub box flew at me and cut the back of my head.. So they made me go to the hospital.... Also, subs dont sound as good up there... The rear well is like its own little box.. Sends the sound forward.. Pounds harder....
Since your power wire is too short ... the solution is easy. Get a nice fused distribution block and connect it to your power wire. Then get another wire and run it from the D-block to your amp. It will look good unlike a "getto" splice. Also, if you get another amp (or EQ, DSP, CD changer, ect.) you have a nice place to connect up your power wire.
