If I swap to a carb will I be able to use a mech. fuel pump?

Just wondering if I could, a friend of mine has an extra holley high flow mech pump. It seems like it would be easier to run this than the electric in tank, but will this work? Thanks.

What do you want to put it on?

In general, it will work with most any carb. The in-tank will work fine as well with a regulator. You could even use both with a regulator and return line, best of both worlds.

I personally would rather run a mechanical for most applications. Much easier on the maintenance..especially over an intank pump.

However.there might be problems drawing through the stock intank. It seems to be about 50/50 for whatever reason...some people draw through it with no problem, some (like me when I tried it) it didn't work. I had to put a section of hose in it's place.

i just did a FI to carb swap also. right now im running the mechanical pump with the electric in tank pump still in place and not working, i think its bad in the first place and i pulled the fuse to it. the carb seems to get plenty of gas but i was told that its not a good permanent set-up because the mechincal pump has to work too hard to draw through the electric pump.

i would have taken out the electric pump already but i dont have a good place to jack the rear of the car 3 feet in the air and damn-near drop the axle to get the tank out.

if anyone knows a better way to drop the tank than what the Haynes Manual says lemme know!

Depends on your engine. I have an 87 t/a. It had the 305HO Carb setup on it. I put an 87 truck TBI motor under it. When I tried to swap all the carb stuff over, the manual pump wouldnt swap. The hole in the side of the motor hadnt been reamed out at the factor. Something that might can be fixed at a machine shop, but that would require pulling the engine.

Once again, some motors wont have the block prepped for a manual fuel pump.

I dumped the tbi for a carb and I still use the electric fuel pump. First I used a purolator fuel pressure regulator but soon switched to a Mallory 5 port. The 5 port is good because it has a return line back to the tank. I felt that the electric pump wouldn't have to work so hard with the return setup. I would not use a mechanical with out dropping the tank and taking care of the pickup.

I found that using the electric fuel pump in the tank to be the easiest. I use a Mallory 5-port fuel pressure regulator with return line. I like the return line because it's better for the pump. But, since you have to drop your tank anyway, you may want to ditch the electric pump and put a pipe in there. Good luck....
