my 1986 firebird uses a computer controlled QJ. It's a mess and needs to be rebuilt - a good one. The carb will go on a brand new 350 that's being built. My question is, should I keep this carb or use something else (i.e. edelbrock, demon, etc.).

I have to meet emissions (sniffer) and want to make decent gas milage while still being responsive.

JetChip performance does a really nice rebuild for around $250 - with about 3 week turnaround time. For the same amount of money, I can get a brand new non-computer controled carb.

On this car, about the only thing the computer runs is the mixture on the carb, the distributor timing and the transmission. I'm not certain how a non-computer controlled carb would foul up the works.

any help?

Have Jet take care of you, carb rebuild and chip. Tell them what you're putting it on, they'll match things up for you. You won't have any sniffer issues, mileage will be better than it could be any other carb way, and you're forgetting a couple of things: With a non-CC carb, you need a vacuum/mechanical advance distributor, another cost adder; and, no carb works right out-of-the box - you'll have to tune it, which will add to the cost (minor perhaps, but still real).

CCC will also keep your TCC lockup functional, which can be done non-CC, but another $75 or so to get the kit to do it.
