Holley 750vacuum second. problems
Hey all,
i have a holley 750 vacuum secondaries carb mounted on a motor that used to be TPI. It uses the same cam, etc. My problem is that on startup the electric choke allows the motor to idle at 1900 RPM for about one minute. Then it will let me tap the gas and allow the idle to come down in sections going from 1900 to 1100 to about 600. I was wondering if that was how it should be or if there is something that i can adjust on it. ??? i'm new to carbs and would like some help
Problem #2.
When i try to hit WOT right off the line the car will bog and sometimes it will kill the motor if i don't let off. If i ease into the gas pedal slowly i will not have this problem. Also sometimes when doing 20+ MPH and i hit it the car will hesistate or sometimes bog as well......what gives?
thanks for you time and as always i appreciate your help.

also this carb is brand new from holley and i had it installed and "tuned" at a local speed shop which costed me $70 for them to take off a buddies carb and put mine on and jet it down for the 305. They did this back in march and i really haven't driven the car since due to some surgeries. So the car has about 40 miles since then.

choke is working correctly.
Having a shop jet it down to your car really isn't possible without trial and error. Sounds like they just guessed. A 750 is too big for a stock 305 and may be the cause of the bog(too much air, not fuel). I would put in the stiffest secondary spring and see what happens. If you still have a bog then you may need to adjust the accelerator pump shot. What size jets did they put in? It's getting harder and harder to find mechanics that are good at adjusting carbs, so be prepared to pay if you, or a friend, can't do it yourself. (I think I'm going to start charging for everytime I adjust a friends carb).

ok i'm glad to hear that the choke is working properly. I also know that the 750 is much too large for that 305, but the 305 is only there until my 355 or 383 gets built. I just wanted the car to run well this summer until the motor gets pulled in wintertime. I have no idea what jets they put in or what spring is in there. Could you possibly explain how to check these things or should i just leave them until the new motor gets dropped in?

Well if you want your car to run well, you'll have to read your plugs to adjust the jets. If they're black and sooty take the bowls off and see what number jets you have then step DOWN to a numerically lower jet number usually 2 numbers (like 72 to 70). If they're white then go up in jet numbers. As far as the bogging goes it'll be easier to get the quick change spring kit for the secodaries or the screw down type, what is happing is too much fuel is being dumped right away hence the bog. By going to a stiffer spring your delay the time it takes for the carb to shoot the fuel into the secondaries-it'll let the motor spin up to where it can use the added fuel instead of just dumping and basically flooding it out. Yes a 750 is a little no make that alot too big for a stock 305, but I know what your doing in the big picture. Might as well learn now on the "junk" motor so you'll be up to snuff when you get the bad boy in there!
