to tune a carb..
To tune a carb all you really need to do is hook a vacum guage to one of the vacum ports on the carb and turn the idle mixture screws untill u get the highest vacum right? If so thats not so hard and is it a acurate way to do it? oh and one more thing wut kind of vacum guage do i need cause i have one but it reads in somehting differnt and it maxes out at leik 200 so its not the right kind i guess. thanks

You don't absolutely need a vaccum gauge, but it helps, espacially for beginners. Without one, you can adjust the idle mixture easily as well as curve gain (the ammount of time it takes the engine to go from idle to about 500-1000 RPMs below redline. The acceleration set up is adjusted with primary and secondary venturis, which include a seat and a needle. The way these work is the engne vaccum pulls the A/F mixture through a progressively narrow channel, which excelerates the mixture further and adds turbulence to help mix the air and the fuel. The needle acts as a metering device, which can move in and out to adjust the flow of fuel to the engine. The needles can be purchased in various applications, such as street, off road, and track. If you have an AFB carb (edelbrock, carter) edelbrock's website has a tuning guide. Holley carb tuning info should be on the holley site as well.
