4bbl carb

I was wondering if a 4bbl carb is good on gas? I own an 86 trans am, 305, 5.0 L. And also, every time I try to start my car, Ive always have to pump the gas pedal to start my car. I cant just go into my car and just turn the key to start it because my car wont start. Please tell me whats wrong?

not sure what the technical term is for pumping the gas pedal on a carb car, but I know it is standard on carb cars, as it is even on my GM starting procedures for my car.

If you are looking to get into a car and turn the key, get an EFI car.

As for good on mileage that depends on your definition of
"good" I get about 15mpg city, don't know highway yet, but taht is with 3.73's a fed up dist. and not completed tuned engine.

They can be made to run well, but there are always trade offs, you can make the easiest power with carb.

Pumping the gas on a carbed car sets the choke. Choking allows for easier starts, especially in cold mornings. EFI cars are under pressure and computer controls the air/fuel mixture.

Some 4 barrels are decent on mileage if you are not opening the secondaries. The QJet has (I've heard) smaller jets in the primaries than a 2 barrel carb.
