E4ME question

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and have a couple of questions I hope somebody can answer. I have a 87 El Camino SS with Thorley tri Y headers, Edelbrock cam (RV style mild cam), Performer intake, custom exhaust, all else stock, the engine size is a 305. My carb when you remove the air intake lid has a strong gas smell, I ran it with the the lid turned upside down for a week and the smell was less to gone, what would be causing this? Also, my milage is in the 9-11mpg range, I feel this is to low for what I have installed, what could be causing this? It runs fine, no bogging, hesitation, idles good, sometimes the idle is a little rough but not to out of the ordinary. Also I thought it would have more power than what it feels like it has. Any help would be great, I've had no luck with the El Camino forums and have found some great info here, hence the question. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

The only code stored is the code 41. I've checked all connections around distrubitor and will check around ECM unit this afternoon. What else could it be?
