looking for some help
hello i just got a 84' camaro with a lg4 with a 4bbl carb and its got a stumbling problem. it stumbles when i hit the gas from a stop in drive ( havent tried it in park yet) and doesnt clear up. it also does it when i floor it from a roll. if i go easy on the gas it is fine. everything is stock on the car. i am going to try to fix it tomarrow so i was looking for some ideas. Oh yea i am new to carb tuning. thanks
IT could be the pump or the fuel filter may be a little clogged. check both. Also check your air filter. If you are hammering down and your filter isn't keeping up, it is basically flooding your engine.
You say that the engine stumbles. Do you mean that it hesitates or it tries to die?

Most "carburator problems" actually are ignition problems.
Be sure the ignition system is in good shape before blaming the carb.
Check the plugs, wires, cap and rotor. replace as nessessary.
After inspecting the ignition system, there is a vacuum diaphram on the side of quadra jet carbs. it controles the opening of the secondary air valve. (delays opening) it also controls the choke pull off. If the diaphram is no good the choke will not work right and the secondaries will tend to open too soon causing a stumble.
a common problem,,, but not as common as old worn out ignition parts.

I agree that ignition is responsible for a lot of "carb" problems. The descriptions of the symptoms indicate a problem with anything other than gentle application of throttle, not just WOT application. That suggests an accelerator pump problem.
To check the accelerator pump, have the engine warmed up, then turn it off. Remove the air cleaner (or at least the top), and look down the front barrels of the carb. Open the throttle by hand - you should see two squirts of fuel into the barrels. If not, or if the streams aren't strong or consistent, you've got an accelerator pump problem. It is fixed by rebuilding the carb (at least if the pump is bad, you'd be best off going throught the whole thing, anyway; and a new pump comes in the rebuild kit).
Unless, you are indeed talking about WOT only. In that case, you could have the problems 'bird described, or a problem with the AV hanger cam.
