Carb/Intake question...

I recently purchased an original, rebuilt 305 for my 86 T/A. Question is what would be a good intake and carb setup for this mild engine. (My drag racing days are long gone) Looking for a good daily driver with some throttle response. Any help would be appreciated........

P.S. Got an excellent deal on the net for the engine

id say an edelbrock performer intake or an air gap performer r somrthing comparable to them by holley and weiand. for carbs either a rochester quadrajet or a 600 cfm edelbrock performer carb.

Do you still have the ECM in yours?

I have an 87 Z38 with the LG4 motor & disconnected the ECM completely.

I went with the Edelbrock 2104 Performer, Holley 4160 600 CFM carb, Accel Dist & coil, & everything works great.

I'm not sure about the 86 model, but on the 87, I had to exchange the Edelbrock intake for the one they gave me at first as the center bolts are at a slightly different angle than the rest.

I have not really got on it but it feels lots better than the older computer assist carb & I still have the factory exhaust including exhaust manifolds.

simply put, if you pull the quad off the motor you will have to totally unhook the computer, there are no aftermarket carbs that have computer hook-ups. if you go with the edle. you will need to get a non-cc distributor and if you have a 700R4 tranny you will need to find a way to lockup the converter.

Don't waste money on aftermarket carb & distributor for a daily driver.

If a Holley, Demon, Edelbrock, non-CC q-jet, and CC q-jet were all sitting on the shelf with all the required supporting equipment available, at no cost to you regardless of which one you chose, the best choice for a daily driver would be the CC q-jet.

The best manifold for any of them would be a Weiand Action+ EGR or GMPP q-jet EGR. But, assuming you don't have one of those on the shelf above, the factory aluminum intake manifold is just fine for the stated use and desired results.

Put your money into exhaust, ignition coil & module, and air cleaner upgrades. Cam upgrade wouldn't hurt, but don't have any idea what your rebuild has in it.
