Fuel Pumps for a Complete Idiot

Okay, the new motor ran well for a while, then I tried tuning the carb and the fuel pump started cutting out. I need help. My brother gave me his Holley Red Electric fuel pump to use but I have no idea what I'm doing underneath that car. I don't know if i can leave the old pump in there or do i take it out? I really have absolutely no idea what I'm doing or how to do this. Can any of you experienced car guys out there give me a step-by-step on how to do this. I'd really like to do this on my own...my brother has really done a lot of the work. Any help on this subject and helping me to become a better car guy will be greatly appreciated!

It would be a good idea to take off the other pump especially if it is an in tank one.

Removing the old mechanical pump is more than a good idea you NEED to, get a block off plate. Install the electrical pump close to the tank in line with the supply line. Hook the wires up to a wire hot when key is on (through a fuse of course) or put it on a separate switch. You could use a relay also, it's a little bit safer and supplies more juice to the pump.

So I'm definitely going to have to drop the tank to get the old fuel pump out. Is there anybody who's had experience with the Holley inline elctric fuel pumps who can help me out with a place to hook it up and the best place to splice the wires into?

Okay, I've decided to start on dropping the fuel tank today. Where is the best place to mount a Holley "red" inline electric fuel pump on a 1991 camaro?

On the right (passenger side) on the strut mount is where I pust mine. Anywhere not too close to the exhaust. You will also need s fuel pump relay kit. Jegs has a Painless Wiring one for $30 i think it cost. Maybe less. You can splice in directly to the battery, then find your ignition wire to turn on the pump when you turn the key. It's not too hard. Th wired are each labeled. That's the way I would do it. It may just be easier to pick up a mechanical fuel pump also. They work just fine. In fact I changed to electric for about a day then took it back off. The mechanical one gives me piece of mind that it is actually working and no fuse is going to blow or something. Hehe. Let us know how hard it was to drop the tank. I have to change the pickup on mine this weekend. ugh

I was actually thinking about it today. I am going to drop the tank tonight and I thought about just going to autozone and getting a replacement intake fuel pump. I figured that could work for a while and it's only $30. I mean i have been using the old 140000+ stock fuel pump with the mallory 3 port AFPR, maybe it was just the old fuel pumps time to go.
