smog

i have not took my car to get it somged yet, but when i start it up there is a fair amount of smoke coming out the tail (more than most cars on the road) it does this the most when the car is in park, the rpm are runing around 1500rpm in park, are there tips to cut down on the smog out of the tail pipes?

That carb gets most of its tuning info from the O2 sensor. When was the last time you changed it? If you can't remember I would change it now. They are cheap ($20) and reasonably easy to replace.

Make sure you warm the car up well before going in for the test. 20-30 minute drive should do it.

Do the RPM's drop after the motor warms up? If not then the Choke might be stuck ON.
Like Guza said, once it warms up and goes into "closed loop" mode, the O2 sensor/computer should control A:F ratio so that it passes smog easily. The ignition system needs to working good and the exhaust also must be leak free for this to happen.

Sounds like you have an electrical problem.
Might be a bad Choke Relay. Do you have a volt/ohm meter that we can use to troubleshoot this problem? Give me some time to look at the wire diagram for the 84 H.O.

That can be caused by two things. 1. Most common someone grounded the choke wire and blew a fuse. The fuse is located in the top left corner of the fuse box. 2. The alternator isnt putting out enough power, choke light is a secondary warning for low amps.

The smoke on startup is most likely the dreaded valve guide/stem seal problems associated with every SBC but especially the 305.
