I think that is what the problem is, the engine runs fine when it was, but has problems running when cold and warming up....it will start but sputter, backfire, run really rough, die, etc etc...any ideas....not a thirdgen car, but thirdgen related....

Who knows....
There's what they call "universal" choke cable kits out there, but they're not quite completely "universal"; they require that the carb have a place that you can bolt a cable housing to, and a linkage that you can attach a cable inner to.
I'd give the odds of being able to convert an electric choke carb to manual choke, other than a Holley or other aftermarket, as somewhere between slim and none.
Sounds to me like you could fix the one that's there, and it would be back like it was when it was new.
