Can someone help ID a carb?
I have a Rochester quadrajet #17061824. I would to know what year it is, applications and it's CFM. I think it's a POB carb but I am not sure. If someone could help me to identify this I would appreciate it very much. Thanks.

Might want to recheck the #'s. I'm not coming up with anything for that series.

I took a look at the numbers.
17061621 is on the top of the carb.
17061824 is on the rear.
There is another number by the throttle it's not clear but looks like 1759233.
I am not sure which number is used to identify it.
five7kid can you look it up again using the 17061621?
Is there anywhere else I should look for a number?
Thanks for your help.

That doesn't look like a carb number; looks like a casting # to me.
Look on the driver's side, right above the secondary throttle shaft, where there used to be a long screw that went all the way from the air horn to the TB, but they haven't put screw there since about 68, but the place in the fuel bowl for it to go through is still there; look for a stamped number (NOT cast) on that flange looking place on the casting.

I took a close look. The number by the throttle is a stamped number. It is 17059233 with B7A just under it. The 5th and 6th digit I am not sure about. It was very hard to read because they were so lightly stamped but I took my best guess. All the other numbers I am sure about. Thanks for your help, I do appreciate it very much.

The first 5 numbers I am sure about, 17059. The next two I am not sure of but looks like 2 3. The last number I am sure of and it's 3. So could some one please look-up this number 17059233 for me. Again, this is the stamped number on the throttle side. Thanks

1705 = E4M (electronic control)
9 = from a year ending in 9 (??) AFAIK there were no E4MEs in either 79 or 89; you sure it's not a 4?
2 = Chevrolet passenger car
33 = ?? I don't recognize it

I just took a look at a Hayes manual I have for 70 - 81 Firebirds. It lists for 1979 two carb numbers that are very close. The first is number 17059253 and another is 17059553. They are M4MC. The number I got off my carb is 17059233 so It must be a 1979. Did they have electronic control in 79? I would still like to know what the CFM's of this carb is if anyone knows.

You're right, my bad.... 1705 is a M4M, 1708 is the E4M. I guess my brain got a cramp or something.
It's a Q-Jet. "CFM" is the wrong question. They're all the same except for the ones on certain early 70s Buick 455s. They all flow about 730-760 CFM, except for the above ones, which flow about 825. They added a little tang on the sec air valve of some of the ones for small motors like 305s, to limit how far the AV can open; those will only flow a little over 600 CFM unless you grind off the tang.
But, "how many CFM" is the wrong question to ask because it really doesn't apply. They don't come in "sizes" like Holleys or something.

I dont mean to interupt or anything, but i have the same problem, and rather than make a whole new post i just replied here. I have an 82 CamaroZ28 with a 305, maybe/maybe not the original quadrajet.
On the driver side stamped verticaly under the sec air valve it says : .17082204. and under that: .1092 DUM.
Now everything i have looked up on qjets says they only had 7 didgets or something like that, but i cant get any good info. I recently covered those little caps that leak under the float bowl with epoxy, and went from 10 miles per gallon to 12, wow. My engine is all stock so something is wrong, ignition is good so im blaming the carb. Any help is greatly apreciated.

17082204
170 - Qjet
82 - 1982
2 - 49 state
0 - Chevy
4 - Auto
This is based on the info I found, but I could be wrong.
Looks like the original carb.

That analysis of the number is not strictly correct; for instance, your 17059 etc. carb isn't from 1959.
1708 = E4M (AFAIK all E4M are E4ME but I could be wrong about that)
2 = year ending in 2
204 = some Chevrolet pass car application
So, it passes the smell test as being a candidate for the original. 204 is in fact the number on alot of the carbs that come in these cars.

Hey thanks, but does the 1092 DUM under the other number have any significance? And rather than you guys take your time explaining so much is there a good site somewhere i can get info about qjets and how to improve the performance? I think everything i found was for 67-69 camaros. And I have a Rochester book but it was printed in 1973, so it doesnt have the E4M or E4ME. And I might sound a lil dumb but, what is AFAIK?
Thanks again

I don't know what that other set of #s is, but I'd suspect some sort of production code (date, shift, operator, stuff like that)
I've just figured them out from dealing with so many.
I could be wrong; but as far as I know, AFAIK stands for As Far As I Know.
