eliminating the computer

I have an 85 iroc with the L-69:
I would like to completely eliminate my computer, and most of the unecessary electronics in my engine bay. Other than a new carb and distributor, what else do i need to modify to have my engine run completely without the aid of the computer?

Nothing that I can remember right off hand. If you had an auto then you would need some way of locking the converter and you might have to deal with TV alignment issues with some carbs. However with a manual a carb and dist is pretty much all you need.

If you check out the carb board they could probably give you all the answers you need. This board is for modifying the computers to make EFI work better than a carb'd setup could ever dream of running

Welcome aboard black85IROC, look around a bit. It's a great message forum with lots of great info

thanks, i just put an edelbrock performer 1400 and a stock SBC dist on this weekend. I got it tuned and it runs pretty well, just minor details like my old drop base airfilter assembly hits the gas line and the throttle linkage a little bit. other than that it works well together.

What "stock" distributor are you talking about?

I hadn't said anything yet, but this really is a not-money-well-spent change, most of the time. No aftermarket carb is going to make any more power than a properly tuned factory q-jet will, and a properly tuned factor q-jet will get better mileage than any aftermarket carb, period.

The only possible gain is by using a mechanical secondary Holley or Demon for drag racing where you don't speed shift. But, that's not the kind of carb you got.

My advice would be to take the carb back before you have had it too long and get your money back. Spend it where it will make a difference. But, it's your car and your money, so do whatever you want.

well thats the first time ever that ive heard someone backing up the Q-jet. a 27 year chevy mechanic, and a 25 year ford mechanic, and even my auto teacher told me that the Q-jet was junk and to go with somthing else.
either way i dont know what im gonna do now. i had planned on just continuing to build on the L69, but recently ive started to get a light knock/squeak out of the bottom end thats been getting worse (most likely a main bearing), and one of the valve cover vents has started to blow smoke due to pretty bad blow-by.
i'm brobably going to just drop in a different SBC (probably a 350) rather then pulling the pan, to which i would most likely find more bad stuff.

BTW the stock vaccum advance distributor is just the standard GM dist used on practically all GM small blocks in the 70's and early 80's. works good.

That q-jet would support any streetable SBC you could put in the car. If you haven't heard people defending them, you haven't been around here enough. They provide the best mix of economy, driveability, and performance you could possibly get, especially in the computer-controlled version.
