anyone changed the fuel pump w/o dropping the tank please answer back

Hello,
YES, I HAVE DONE A SEARCH AND I HAVE LOOKED FOR THE TECH ARTICLES.

SORRY ABOUT THAT!!

I have seen that from the other articles, but most of them do not answer my question, but first here is my story.

I got this camaro from a friend in mid conversion from a v6 to the 350. there is a hole in the hatch area. so that is where I started. I took the old pump out and had a pickup tube welded into place. hooked the lines back up. Now I would like to seal the hole back up. My friend did not keep the piece he cut out. If it is as simple as a piece of metal, what should I secure it down with, screws-I worried about hitting the tank, poprivets-maybe, bolts-how do you tighten them up. Would you use just silicon to produce a seal to keep possible fumes out.

thanks for all and any help from anyone

George Jeffers

anyone know which camaro club, Ohio falls into????

There are threads on how this has been done.

This topic always desheaths a 2 sided blade. Some call it a hack job or defacing the car, others call it an efficiend and effective way to get to the pump. I am keeping my opinion to myself.

The way that i would do it, if faced with it, would be get a sheet of galvanized steel, put a hinge on one side and place those twist-lock fasteners on the other side. Use a weather strip or something around the edge of the body that forms a seal with the newly added "door."

Don't people who fix their car this way just put the carpet back over the hole to cover it so the people they are unloading it to won't notice????

OK, sorry to be so cynical! :-)

I have seen on a mitsubishi they sell an access hatch that you can install.

You could take it to a shop and weld a piece of metal down or have someone do it for you. (Before the tank get filled!) I'd avoid the pop-rivet thing. I had a car with a rotting trunk and ended up drilling holes and pop riviting right through the tank! Scary!

I think I read on these boards about people that had some other ideas.

Since the damage has already been done, and its not your fault, I sincerely feel sorry for you. But, instead of just covering it up, you should look into an access door. YOu can buy them from the major racing companies. It comes with the door, already framed, with latching mechanism and all. Install that, with carpet over or not, doesnt matter. Then go over every single square inch of that car to find any other things the backwards redne*k hick *** owner before you did to it.

Those are the two biggest, you can probably find something from one of them. Maybe just check out the websites to get the 1-800 number and call and ask them. Summit has good phone help. If that doesnt work, try a websearch.

You might even want to call some sheet metal fabrication companies. Some of the A/C ducts on the ship I was on while in the Navy had hatches like that in them. Ones we added so we could stash our sodas in them to keep them cool......
