newb with carbs...someone help a lost kid

I have just put a frsh 350 into my 91 camaro. I has the stock l03 heads with an lt1 cam (roller motor) an intake that is too big for it (power products hurricane= to victor jr) I know its too big of a manifold but I am building another 350 with high rpm cababilities. This is a race only car and just trying to get this new motor broke in but cant with this damn carb. I have never messed with a holley or any carb for that matter. I have always messed with tpi and tbi so I am kinda being thrown for a new learning curve. I have a 650 holley 4150 series that my dad has had on his 71 nova with a 307. The 307 would run very good and idle good. But I put it on this engine and its hard to start and when I get it to start it runs at about 1200 rpms for 5 to 10 seconds then dies. Whats going on?

The timing was accidentally set at about 4 degrees advanced the first couple of time I tried cranking it causing it to back fire twice through the carb. I dont know if it hurt my power valve or not because I dont know carbs so I dont know where the damn thing even is. Can someone please direct me to something that can tell me how to mess with this damn thing> thanks

I am also very new to carbs, traded my TPI for a carbed setup, I learned a coupl of things and please don't take offense I just learned this crap yesterday. you have to push the throttle in a little to have the car start up quick. then once cranked over you have to hold the throttle in a little ways so it could warm up before letting off of the gas or it will die. In my tpi it was turn key and drive, now it a bunch of steps in between lol. guess thats the fun part of being old school..

you might want to toy with the idle mixture screws also.

What is the model number of the carb? The number can be found on the air horn, if there is one.

If this is a race only engine, just curious, why does it have a smallish factory cam (for a 350) and swirlie-crap heads? The LT1 cam can be lived with, but the TBI heads, they are far from performance pieces.

That's not what caused it, 4 degrees is nothing. Double check your plug wires and make sure you have the firing order right.
