Excessive rich condition

I've been trying to squeeze just a few more miles out of my '84 camaro w/ 5.0 H.O. motor. It's got over 300000 on it now so it may be that time. But, before I give up, what are some things I might look into to correct excessive rich (eye burning, instant headache, extreme rich) condition. It seemed to gradually happen over a month or longer period of time. The catalytic converter got completely plugged and then it quit running. I unplugged the cat today and now it runs fairly well but it's still rich rich rich. Any ideas besides just scrapping it? Thanks in advance.

O2 sensor maybe?

Dead computer!
Does the ECM throw any Codes?
Does the CHECK ENGINE light come on?

no check engine light. haven't checked for codes.
