6210 junk?

im having some serious problems with my carb. it says list #6210. the car will run extremly rich one moment, then run lean the next. i will sent the idle at 750 rpm when the car is operating temp, then i will drive it for a little while, maybe turning the car off 2 times, the it will idle at 1300 rpm.

how do i correctly set the idle/air adjustment screws?

does it sound like there is something majorly wrong with the carb?

thanks
pat

Sounds like it could use a rebuild.

That's an extremely good-running carb, on a near-stock motor, anywhere from 302 to 427 CID. It's supposed to be a bolt-on replacement for Q-Jets in those applications. I've used them on all manner of motors for decades, with great results.

Try a rebuild first. Then a little basic Holley tuning. I think you'll like it too.

i actually really like this carb, i've had it for almost 8,000 miles now, and it has ran extremly great. but when i go from beating up on 12 second cars, to hardly getting out of the driveway in 2 days i get frustrated.

anything special i need todo during a rebuild? anything that i can try before i tear it apart to get me through this fall racing season, since i am switching to FI this winter....

thanks

No, nothing really special.... a Holley rebuild is about the simplest of all such procedures, no need to be intimidated by it or put it off or whatever. About the worst thing will be getting the old gasket material off of everything, without tearing up the castings. Which you don't want to do. There's a tiny raised bead to stabilize the gaskets all the way around alot of them, which if you scrape it off during cleanup, just about guarantees that the gaskets won't stay put after assembly. So watch out for that. You can minimize the hassle in the future by spraying the gaskets with spray silicone lube a few times, an hour or 2 apart, before using them. Also, torque everything slowly, gently and evenly; and don't over-tighten the bowl screws.

well today i got to read some previous posts and other articles about carbs. and then i got to talk to the son of the guy that built my carb. i was told when they put this carb together, they did some mods to it that i was not even remotely aware of.....

basically sometime this weekend i will get to talk to his dad that knows everything about it, not just a few things. but what i do know so far is that

only the main body is a 6210
there is no power valve anymore
the metering blocks are totally different
and i am more confused now then when i started

we did get the car to run a little more lean at idle, but still runs extremly rich going down the road. but now the car has a "jerky" feeling going down the road.

can anybody give me any helpful info, any tips?

anything simple things i can look at before i meet up with the builder of the carb?

Sounds to me like it's pretty hard to even guess what might be making it act like that.... one person might call it "custom crafted to one engine's requirements", another might call it "butchered".... you need to put it back stock, and go from there. That means put a power valve back in it, jet it back to the factory settings, and start over.

Your first stop should be here.

i bought everything today to rebuild it, plus a jet assortment.....just not sure if this is the only way to fix it

i think this carb falls in between "custom" and "butchered" but a lot closer to "burtchered"

atleast it was free
