Need new carb?

I have an '84 T/A we are restoring. Getting the block back from the machine shop this week but I am curious about the carb. I wanted to use the stock carb on the car but the previous owner has ditched all the air pipes and the tube going to the cat. I had hopes of removing the cat anyway and putting on headers without the air tubes.(emissions testing not done here) Now if I do not use the AIR system will the ECM still be able to control the carb sufficiently or will it always be in closed loop mode? Should I just get a non computer controlled carb and ditch the ecm? This car is for my son when he turns 16 to drive so it does not need to be a race car. Just a father son project.

Thanks,

Bob

The ECM could care less about the A.I.R. system. It diverts the flow to the manifolds during open loop operation and to the cat during closed loop, but if the system isn't there it just sends voltage to an open circuit and doesn't complain.

Ran mine for 2 years that way before hooking it back up for the required emissions test. Sailed through the testing.

Thanks,

Thanks, I am glad to hear that. I was worried it might lead to problems like check engine light, etc. Glad to hear I can get around the air system.
