That's pretty scarry! I would immediately double-check the exhaust system and make sure your not getting some Co2 into the passenger compartment! From the description you gave there could be a number of things wrong but I'd make a thorough inspection of that exhaust system before driving it around again. The car has sat a while and you may need to rebuild/clean that carb. Let's identify the carb first then try to get some more info about how the car is running at idle, in gear, on the road, warm, cold, etc. That will help the guys around here get you started in the right direction. FIRST.... CHECK THAT EXHAUST SYSTEM.... maybe some critter decided to make a nest in there?

To identify your carb (see photo) a CCC-Q-Jet will have two connections one on the top for the MCS (Mixture control solenoid) and one on the front for the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). Unless a previous owner changed it your '83 should have a CCC-Q-Jet (Computer-Command-Control)

if you smell rotten eggs , check your catalytic converter for flow stoppage. At least that is what it smells like to me..........good luck

wow thanks i checked the exhaust and today when i started it it had a weird knocking, so i asked some friends they think the manifold where it connects to teh exhaust pipes sounds loose because it goes away after like 5-7 mins ( i guess the pipe heats up and expands). thanks for the helpful picture i need to go under the hood tomorrow and check. thanks for all teh help this site has been extremely helpful.
