I hate my demon

so i was racing tonite and i did my burnout and everything and when i came out of my burnout the car started sputtering, spitting, coughing and wanted to die. I had to pedal the carb to keep it running but it still died, and it took forever to start back up, and when it did start back up it sputtered and cleared out. So i run it and first gear went ok, hit second gear and it felt like the car hit a brick wall at 6500 and the motor got very quiet and it wouldnt pull anymore and the temp was rising too. Made another pass and it was fine till 4500 in 3rd gear and it did the same thing. Now when im driving the car sometimes it feels like it is surging and the car will start coughing and sputtering and i have to pedal it to bring it back. It usually happens when i am rolling back off the throttle after taking off. It doesnt happen all the time but it is getting more and more frequent and it does it when it is hot. The carb is a 650 d.p. speed demon with 34* of timing, it ran good the past couple of weeks and then tonight it just started. I am out of ideas please help. I also smell gas really bad when sitting at a stop and it will start surging after that. I have a holley mechanical pump on it.

Only problem I've had with mine was junk in the carb that kept the needle and seat open. That flooded the heck out of it and made it run terrible. Yours sounds like it's running lean all of a sudden. Be worth a shot to see if there's anything floating around inside.

Maybe your fuel is starting to boil in the lines.
