Choke works for long time
Hi,
I have a 1984 TA with Quadrajet carburetor.
My choke does not "turn off" for minutes after starting the engine.
It started many months ago and it became more frequently during the time.
Now it happens always after cold start. And if I push the gaspedal
for 1-2 seconds totally to the bottom then the choke turnes off.
What could be the reason? Maybe just dirt or something like that?
Thank you,
Laszlo

Re: Choke works for long time
yea but what i think hes saying is that it doesnt turn off. i have the same problem. let it warm up, idling at a ridiculous 2000rpm, press gas to floor, or 4500rpm, and it goes normal. An ideas?

Hi,
Yes, that is what I am saying.
Sometimes it turns off after 1 minute but usually "never".
My idle in P or N is then 2300 and I have to push the gaspedal
to the floor for 1 or 2 seconds and then it turns off.
Otherwise I think it would never turn off.
The RPM does not decrease. It is always 2300 and if I push the
gas then it goes back immediately to 800.
What is this? I thought maybe something is just dirty after 23 years
or something like that and the vibration of the engine help the choke
to turn off.
And the problem is in this status that the brake booster does not really
work because the vacuum is not enough and it is hard to stop the car...
And yes, it is colder now here but this behaviour during winters
was never so bad.
Regards,
Laszlo

Choke thermostat getting weak from age perhaps? It's a $25 part around this neck of the woods.

Re: Choke works for long time
Once the cars' warmed up,take your air cleaner lid off and see if the choke is fully open.If not, loosen the choke housing and rotate it to the right some until it is.If it is fully open, you might need to adjust your fast idle cam slightly. The small screw on the passenger side just under the choke housing is the one your looking for.Turn it to the left in small increments until it drops down to a base idle.Might take a couple of cold starts to get it to your liking.
