Keep in mind that if you car is stock it's computer controlled, meaning you would need both a new carb and dist to make it work properly. Also as pointed out above the factory q-jets that came on these cars are quite good at their job, switching to a shineyer, newer carb will result in no gain if your current carb is in good shape. What is your reason for the carb swap?

Replace the carb and you'll also have to replace the computer controlled distributor AND install an alternate means of locking the torque converter. Not easy with only $300. Your mileage (compared to a properly running computer controlled carb) will likely drop as well, costing you more down the road.

Have you, in the past year, replaced your plugs, wires, cap and rotor? Verify timing is correct and no vacuum leaks? These should all be done before installing a new carb and may fix some of your issues with the one you've got.

On top of the above is the O2 sensor new or at least fresh? Torque converter locking at highway speeds?

Fix what you've got. An Edelbrock would be a serious downgrade from a stock computer controlled q-jet. To say nothing of the (already-stated) fact that $300 is about half what you need to put one on.

Listen to naf. He'll get you back on the road.

Speaking of the road, my computer-controlled q-jet just averaged 22 MPG on my "road trip" to Nebraska this week. That while fighting a stiff wind most of the time. The low-elevation power was a lot of fun. . .

(And the high elevation power ain't too shabby. . .)
