EGR without computer.

Hi all.If the computer is removed, will the egr valve still work with just a vacuum source,or does the solenoid need to be kept. Also what happens with the knock sensor without the computer?.Does it need to be removed,or is there a way of keeping it working. Thanks for any help.

Alicat.

Prior to computers, EGR valves were operated off of a timed vacuum port, with a thermal vacuum switch in between so it doesn't operate when cold. The valve itself is the same, but you won't be using the solenoid anymore.

The 3rd gen knock sensor needs the ECM. There were other systems (used in U.S. light trucks in the early 80's) that had a simpler computer system with a knock sensor - the basic timing was controlled old-school, mechanical and vacuum advance, but it had a 5-pin control module and a computer connection.

Re: EGR without computer.

Thanks Five7,So I would need to put a thermal vacuum switch in for the egr?.Also,if everything is fine with the engine, could I disconnect the knock sensor,or is that a bad idea?
I'm just trying to work out what I can remove.I've put a non cc qjet on,and a new dizzy.

The knock sensor isn't doing anything now, so you can either leave it there, or pull it out.

The thermal vacuum switch is a good idea to keep the EGR from opening when the engine is cold. Do you have to keep the EGR for emissions test purposes?

Re: EGR without computer.

The computer is still in at the moment, but it is coming out soon.We dont have emissions testing,(not so far anyway). So I could just blank the egr off then if I dont choose to use it.

That's what people typically do.

Re: EGR without computer.

I blocked mine off when I realized it seized. When I (tried) to take my car in for air care, they never checked for an EGR valve. I blocked mine off with a piece of steel and a gasket.
