Carburator/distributor question

Well ive been reading up that if you change your carburator you will also have to change your distributor to an aftermarket one. Ive seen many people on this forums talk about it. Well i need help choosing the correct ignition/distributor. Or is it necessary to get one. Im just confused on whether if it needs to be replaced and what with.

My current setup is a edelbrock 3701 intake manifold with a edelbrock 1406 carburator. Can anyone suggest a good/somewhat cheap distributor to go with it. Any response would be very well appreciated.

Re: Carburator/distributor question

I've got one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Looks identical to a MSD Street Fire I think. I was running with the ECU still hooked up and the original distributer in place before, but all of the injection side of things removed. It was running like crap but it had other problems too so I'm not sure what was down to the distributor. So you can get away with it but I would just fit a HEI distributor with mechanical and vacuum advance, they're cheap and you can get rid of the ECU.

Re: Carburator/distributor question

You're cheapest option would be to find a good used GM HEI distributor. I can pull them from junkyards for $10 and with about $10 in parts from Ebay you can rebuild it to like new. I did that for my 350 swap and it's been running great for me.
