CCC to Edelbrock 1406, How I did it

After a few weekends of work, the CC Qjet in my '84 Z28 was working pretty good on the 350 GM crate engine that I had in front of a T5 transmission. Very strong and torquey and I was getting around 21 mpg on my commute. Then I started having a series of driveability issues with the worn out carb, TPS, oxygen sensor and wiring. I really didn't want to deal with these random malfunctions associated with the old carb and equally old electroncs so I decided to simplify.

I've successfully installed several Edelbock 1406 carbs in various cars that had stock 350 engines. They were all almost perfectly tuned right out of the box. I decided to get one for my latest Z project. I also bought a Summit vacume advance HEI distributor, Spectre 9" air cleaner, EGR block off plate, carb mounting studs, fuel filter, longer return spring, fuel line and vacume line. I already had a Performer intake manifold.

I spent several hours removing the old carb, EGR, distributor and the maze of wiring and vacume lines connected to the CC Qjet. The ECU is still mounted but it will be removed tomorrow. Another couple of hours I had my shiny new parts installed and had the Evap system figured out. After a quick double check of all the nuts, bolts, firing order and connections, I turned the key and the car started after just a few seconds. After adjusting the timing, the engine was idling smoothly at 600 rpm. Time for a test drive!

The combination ran great right off the bat. Much stronger and smoother than the old and tired CC Qjet. 1st and 2nd gear go up in smoke, third gear barks the tires. All this with a rolling start and no speed shifting. The cat converter seems to be dealing with the HC output cause the exhaust doesn't stink and the outlet temp is only a little hotter than with the Qjet. The Evap system seems to be working properly, no gas smell while sitting in a closed garage.

I hope this helps others who are considering this conversion. Here are some pics:

I completely did away with the evap can, and installed a coolant overflo/washer bottle combo from a Ford Explorer in it's place - that unit is square and about the size of a battery, so it sits there nicely.
