I need a cheap fuel pump

My Holley blue went out yesterday and I've got 75 bucks to buy a new one. I don't need anything that big honestly that's just what came on the car when I bought it. My engine is basically a stock carbed l98. I need some help finding something that will hold up. All I've really found is the mr. gasket they sell at autozone and I've read some bad stuff so I need some suggestions guys. I want to place an order monday but if I can't find anything else I'm just gonna have to buy the Mr. Gasket I guess, and I really don't want to do that.

EDIT: Also I want to add that I did see the other post about electric fuel pumps but didn't want to steal the thread and I'm probably working on a tighter budget than the other guy.

Re: I need a cheap fuel pump

Was the Holley trying to pull through a dead pump in the tank?

If so, a new pump will die soon too. If using external electric pumps, the in-tank pump must be removed and replaced with a carb pickup. If you didn't do the job, I'd be looking at dropping the tank to see what's in there first and save yourself the aggravation - alot of folks just plug any old pump inline and try to draw through a dead in-tank pump, and end up frying pumps.

Plus, if the in-tank pump is still there - maybe it works, and you'll just need a regulator rather than a new pump!

Re: I need a cheap fuel pump

I didn't convert the car to carb, but I know the guy who did. I think it was a 6cyl car originally but I'm not sure(if that matters). But my pump isn't completely dead, it will run until it warms up then you can just hear it bogging down and the car starts to cut out and eventually die. I talked to the previous owner yesterday and he said that he expected the holley to go out the whole time he had it cuz he bought it used from a guy that bought it used. lol

But I really don't know how he did it, I don't know much about any of that but I can talk to him soon and find out I guess.

Re: I need a cheap fuel pump

I would find out if I could. Trying to draw the fuel through the intank pump could make the Holley overwork itself, thus heating up.

Re: I need a cheap fuel pump

Yeah I understand. I've called a couple times but havn't got an answer. I can say tho that neither the pump nor the wires are hot when the pump fails. I crawled under the car yesterday and they were all cool to the touch. The car will crank and run fine right now. That's what's had me thinking it was a wiring problem at first. I havn't drove the car very much, but it's done this twice. Once the car sits for a while and cools down, it'll crank right up.

I just need this thing fixed asap. This is my only vehicle and I was suppose to have it running a month ago. Everytime I fix something, something else goes out. I had just got a radiator yesterday when this happened. So far it's just been problem after problem and it's just sat in the yard.

Re: I need a cheap fuel pump

Ok so I talked to the guy and he said the intake pump was removed, and that the Holley Blue had been overheated due to being too close to the exhaust and he was surprised it lasted this long.

I just drove the car for 3 hours with no problems. The only thing I notice was when I gave it a little extra gas it didn't seem to be as strong as it usually is. I guess I'm just going to buy a mr gasket tomorrow and replace the pump and hope the problem is fixed.

I am so fed up with poor Mr. Gasket quality (beyond "cheap"), that I can't in good conscience keep silent.

While you're at it, get something that has a chance of working.

Re: I need a cheap fuel pump

Yeah I tried to take the car into town to buy the mr gasket and never made it. The car is sitting in walmart parking lot right now. I appreciate the advice, it seems as if everyone has had trouble with these pumps. I havn't even got to look at the local autozone to see what they offer but I was told it was all they had. All I have is 75 bucks, and I can't find anything in that price range.

Hopefully the car will start tomorrow and I can try and get it home.

Edit:: just found this

http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/15913/10002/-1

Would there be any problems with that one?

Re: I need a cheap fuel pump

I got a Pro comp off E bay and so far it's working great. I got the 140gph with regulator. I paid like $70 total. This is the second car I've used this kind of pump on and so far no problems but hey It is what it is, It might not be for everybody. My

I've had a Pro Comp electric water pump on the '57 and haven't had a lick of trouble with it. I'd take a Pro Comp over Mr. Gasket any day.

Re: I need a cheap fuel pump

I checked ebay and they're going for 60 bucks. I'd really prefer to go through jegs over ebay. Would that jegs pump be a good choice or would it be too small?

No the Jegs pump would be just fine. My brother uses the Summit version and has no problem.

Re: I need a cheap fuel pump

put in a mechanical pump that would be cheap, my fuel pump went out and thats what I did. It was 5 bucks for the mounting plate 5 bucks for the pushrod, 3 bucks for the gaskets and I already had a pump but az has them for 20 bucks.

Re: I need a cheap fuel pump

Ok guys I just had an idea. I should have thought of this already but for some reason it never came to me.

Before I sat up my old 91, I had just installed a brand new tpi fuel pump in the tank. This should swap right into my 88 right? This was originally a v6 car I believe. I already have a regulator on the car so all I would need to do is put in the tpi pump hook up the power and ground and it should work? If this will work as simple as that, I may just have to drop the tank and save my money. As soon as I get the green light on this I'm gonna start pulling the tank. Hopefully it's as easy as I'm thinking.

Also gonna add that I've been searching and from what I see there aren't any problems with doing this. Just need a little confirmation.

That will only work if your regulator is a return type, i.e., regulates outlet pressure by returning fuel to the tank. If your reg is the typical inexpensive "dead-head" type, you'll burn out an in-tank pump.

Personally, I think the in-tank pump is the superior set-up, as it will be quieter, stay cooler, and can supply plenty of fuel for a pretty healthy engine. The only drawback is the more expensive return-style regulator that is required.

Re: I need a cheap fuel pump

Ok, yeah I've got a cheapo regulator. I guess I'm just going to order the jegs. I didn't really want to drop the tank anyway. Thanks for the info.

Yes IT WILL BURN OUT THE PUMP ask me how I know... Use the mallory return regulator and it will work fine. My intank pump just burned out because of the dead-head regulator, I just bought the car and didn't have time to swap regulators, the damage was already done and the pump burned out on me before I could. I took the cheap way out and put a mechanical pump in.

I agree on the intank with a mallory reg being the superior setup, thats how I have my '89 setup and it works excellent. I hate the external pumps for the noise.

Re: I need a cheap fuel pump

Well this pump is suppose to arrive today.

http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/15913...oductId=937089

Do I need to run this without a regulator? Right now I've still got the one I was using for the holley blue installed.
