You can - but you'll have to remove the gas tank and take out the in-tank pump and replace with a carb pickup - the mechanical pump will not be able to pull fuel through the unused in-tank pump.

I'm assuming you've swapped to a carb, a mechanical won't produce the fuel pressure needed for any FI.

Why not just get the Mallory 4309 fuel pressure regulator and use the in-tank pump?

The factory used a 4-bolt plate with 2 small bolts at the top, and the two fuel pump bolts going in the bottom. You need a different plate, one with an oval hole in the bottom for the fuel pump arm to go through.

Then you need to hope that your cam has a fuel pump lobe on it. And hope that the block has the fuel pump push rod hole drilled.

It would be easier to use a return-style fuel pressure regulator like a Mallory 4309.
