I have an 87 z28 5speed that origanally came with an LG4 (computer control q-jet and HEI). Last summer i rebuilt a 350 and installed it. Here are some of the specs...
-completely remachined block and heads (.030 over on block, 193 heads)
-comp cams XE262 flat tappet (matching lifters and pushrods)
-used factory rocker arms (will upgrade when i have $$$ for rollers)
-edelbrock performer intake
-flowtech headers
the motor was installed and i hooked up the 305 carb and distributor and had them tuned. it ran fine for a while but always seem like the computer was fighting the cam ((rpms would jump around at idle and it seemed like the idle rpm was always changing)) i read somewhere that the computor could retard the timing by itself.
the bottom line is this. i would like to eliminate the computor and all those dang wires. im interested in starting with the carb. so far the most appealing carb to me is the Holley classic double pumper 650 cfm. (0-04777 on jegs). i like the fact of mechanical choke and secondarys and the size seems smart for a 350ci engine. i would appreciate any of your thoughts and suggestions

The computer shouldn't have any problem with that cam. Did you put in a 350 knock sensor and module?
If you go with that carb, you'll need a distributor with vacuum and mechanical advance as well.

i bought a new knock sensor for a 350. i dont know about any module. the distributor im looking at is an HEI with a vacuum advance. jegs part# 555-40002 . http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/40002/10002/-1
is that a wise choice? is the carb a wise choice?

If the distributor is a quality piece it will work for your application. I say that because I have had about all I can take with china made distributors that dont work.
