help please
Ok . So background. I rebuilt my qjet. Put it back on car. It starts. Good sign. Runs with foot on gas. Dies as soon as I take it off. Carb is not original to car. Either is motor. It is a carb that came on a 305 originally in 1985 and a truck. Car was TPI. Carb was hacked in by a PO. Does have vacume advanced distributer and mecanical fuel pump. Line into pump from tank. Line to carb from pump. Other line on pump, which I assume would be return is blocked off. So my questions. First I have a grey plug on carb that looks like the blue MCS on cc qjets. What is it and does it need plugged to something. Second. Choke is not hooked up. Is there a way I can " rig" electrical choke while I trouble shoot. Third. It only runs when I keep it revved to 1200 or so RPMs. Dies when I take foot off. Then when I try to start it again half the time it will puff out a ball of flame. And lastly it blows thick white smoke. Could be a lot of condensation but I haven't ran it long enough to see. So, with all that, how do I make it run right. Are there adjustments I can do to carb??

Re: help please
is there any way you can post a pic of the grey plug?? as for rigging a choke, I would look into an electric choke kit and install that. I am going to hazard a guess that the float is out of adjustment as one of the problems you have. Not sure about the blocked off line you have.

Re: help please
My phone won't let me post pics, but the grey plug looks exactly the same as the blue plug does on computer controlled q jets. As far as electric choke, the carb has one but the car was TPI originally so not " wired" for a choke, and I don't have a clue to how I would wire it. The float I thought I set to what the instructions said , but was my first rebuild. Also the instructions said carb was for 305 vehicles while mine is a 327, don't know how much of a diff that makes and if the float would need to be diff. I believe the blocked off line would be a return line. I have gotten it to run but still have to rev it high to keep it running. I was also thinking maybe I should get a fuel pump regulator to make sure I am not getting to much fuel

Re: help please
Wire the choke to an engine in 'run' 12volt source. The factory wired it through the alternator so that it would only power the choke when the motor was, in fact, actually running. This was to prevent the choke from opening while the key might be in 'run' for a while before starting the motor.
The plug should be fine disconnected. IIRC the pump shot would default to normal without voltage.
The float level would be the same no matter what motor the carb is mounted to.
Get your choke working or manually shut the choke to get it started and warmed up. See if you can drop the idle speed down and the white smoke dissipates.
Did this, in fact, run before we rebuilt the carb?

Re: help please
I will wire the choke up , and it was running before I rebuilt it. I still had to warm it up for a while. I take that back. It was running, then I think the float got stuck so I rebuilt it. I have had a few threads here on carbs. I will take carb back apart to check float. I believe that I got the white smoke to go away. I put heet in tank and then have ran it a few times. Now the only problem I have is the backfiring through carb and the small ***** of flame that shoot out every now and then. My car is pretty hacked up , so I am trying to fix it the best I can right, so any help advice etc would be appreciated
