Carb Installation Trouble
Carb Installation Trouble
Hey everyone
I'm trying to install a new Holley Quadrajet on my brother's 1986 Trans Am, which still has all emissions equipment. I have a couple of issues.
1. The carburetor instructions have one of the connections on the front of the carb labeled "purge." Where on the engine should this hose go?
2. The carburetor has a tiny clearance issue with the EGR valve on the car. I don't have time to eliminate the EGR system, and if I raise the carb by just a milimeter or so I should be able to mount it. I am planning on cutting a second gasket and mounting it on top of the first, to raise the carb just a tiny bit, so I will have two gaskets installed. Is this a bad idea?
3. I assume if I don't connect the EEC hoses to anything, since the new carb doesn't have two connections for them, that everything will run fine? The car does not need to pass emissions, I plan on just plugging up the EEC hoses.
Any help is appreciated.
Also, if anyone has any diagrams which label all of the hose connections from the stock E4MC carb, that would help a lot. I haven't been able to find anything so far, but I'm still searching online.

A Holley Quadrajet? Is it a Rochester Quadrajet rebuilt by Holley?
The purge line is a ported vacuum connection to send a timed signal to the evap canister to make it vent its contents into the PCV port.

Re: Carb Installation Trouble
'Purge' should connect to a hose that goes to the charcoal canister IIRC. As for clearance for the EGR - what gasket are you using between the carb and intake? GM used a really thick (like 1/4") cardboard/fibre kinda gasket in there, not a thin paper gasket. You can still buy the thick gaskets at most parts stores, I know FelPro still makes them.
