Stock Carb What intake

Hello,

I have a 1983 trans am with the 4bbl Carb. I want to keep the carb but was thinking of switching to a aftermarket intake. I want to keep the egr and all other stock items that attach to the stock intake. Does anyone know of an aftermarket intake that will work. Thank you.

The RPM doesn't have EGR provision.

Edelbrock Performer and the Professional Products Cyclone have versions for spreadbore and EGR. The GM ZZ4 intake does as well, but is a bit pricey unless you can find one used or take-off.

Weiand Street Warrior #8125 has all the provisions for a factory Quadrajet, and is a much more modern design than the Performer. I had one on my 305 and really liked it.

I don't see EGR.

Specifically in the first sentence of the instructions - "(not equipped with EGR)".

Whoops, I was running them with aluminum 113 'vette heads. Uses an external EGR setup.

Sorry.

In my opinion, there isn't really a need to purchase an aftermarket intake for a stock-ish 305. The factory aluminums are a good design. If you are going for looks just have your intake media blasted to remove the black paint.

The money would be better spent in other places.

But the Edelbrock performer intake is what you would want.

I'd spend my money on headers and new catback before I swapped out the intake unless I was doing a motor swap. And then I'd still go headers first. Stock exhaust on our cars is terrible.

Re: Stock Carb What intake

I just rebuilt an Edeldbrock 1406 and put it on the stock Q-jet intake with an adapter. The stock motor now runs like a scalded dog. The q-jet I had on there before would spin in first and chirp in second. Now with the 1406, it burns first and second and chirps third!

You could have gotten the q-jet to do that for less money than what you spent on the Edelbrock.

Whether you care or not, the Edelbrock is not legal for a street driven car.

You can make it pass a sniffer test, but technically any change to the emissions equipment violates federal law.

There are emissions-legal aftermarket intakes, yes. They are a little better than the factory intake, but not significantly.
