new to f body world 305tpi to 355 carb questions
hey guys im dropping a 355 carb into my 86 iroc z this is the first i have every tried doing something like this and my first time ever messing with a car. it was always old 4x4 trucks built for mudding. im planning on running a air gap intake. with a 4 barrel ederbrock carb. im not sure on the carb size i havnt seen it yet its a freebee from a guy at work that just had it gone threw and was on his ford 302. its been a while since i messed with gas motors i stepped into the diesel world and im still in it this is just a fun project car. how can i tell what size carb it is? also im putting a 350th in rather the 700r4. what kick down cable to i use on the trans i picked one up that has a tpi cable on it can i make this work with a carb or do i need one for a carb set up? im also still digging info up on how to make the kickdown and throttle cable work. what brakets are u guys all using can i get some part numbers places to get and maybe some pics of different set ups? do i use my stock trottle cable or better off getting a cut to fit lockar cable? i also ran into a small mishap when pulling motor and trans out. i kinda forgot to pull the speedo cable out of the trans. what do i do about that since the end is all ripped off now. honestly i need to know how to make the speedo work with the 350th anyways. another question i have is the power steering pump mounting brakets. im going to be putting headers on, the mounting braket i have for the power steering pump bolts up to the exhuast manifold bolts on the outside of the manifold how do u go about this? do u change power steering pumps to the other style and use different brakets or what? if i can get some help that would be great!!! thanks for looking!

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
Let's establish something first: What are you going to do with this car when you're finished with these mods? I see "fun project car", but personally I like to enjoy the fruits of my labor when I'm done. Unless this will be a car that is only raced on weekends, and either trailered to the track or only driven a short distance, I question your approach.
If you plan on driving this car regularly, keep the TPI and TH700. You didn't say much about the 350 you're planning on putting in, but unless the cam is pretty wild with a lot of overlap, the TPI would be the better "fun driver" choice.
If you change transmissions, the TH350 will require a different crossmember, and different driveshaft unless you have a 9" tailshaft TH350. It also doesn't have any provision for mounting the torque arm. Your choices on the torque arm are an aftermarket bracket kit that bolts to the transmission to connect to the TA; an aftermarket crossmember that mounts an aftermarket TA (bypasses the mounting to the transmission, and solves your "different crossmember" issue); or a Jegster torque arm (from Jegs, you may have guessed) that mounts a saddle in the driveshaft tunnel to mount their torque arm. You should be able to get a TH350 kickdown cable most anywhere - Lokar, Summit/Jegs, parts store. Just don't ask for one for a 3rd gen Camaro...
Edelbrock carbs have the part number stamped on the front of the throttle plate. Should be "14xx". You can Google that #, or post it here.
Personally, I wouldn't run a carb unless it was a track-only car. And, I wouldn't run an Edelbrock carb on a track-only car. There, now my personal biases are out of the way.
To mount the PS bracket, cut off the back leg. Then use a spacer the same length as the thickness of the stock exhaust manifold minus the thickness of the header flange, between the header flange and bracket. I don't know of anyone or any kit that moved it over to the other side of the engine (wasn't even done on right hand drive conversions, to the best of my knowledge).
You can still buy carb'd throttle cables for 3rd gens. Check your local chain parts store, '82-'87 V8 VIN "H".

Re: new to f body world 305tpi to 355 carb questions
Well to start with the 305 tpi us out along with the whole harness. I'm not putting it back in now. The car has a salvaged title. And rust not a looker at all. The tpi harness was all cut up when I got the car. It was a mess of wire nuts. I wasn't even going to begin to try and trace stuff and fix it right. The car ran like a$$ I know nothing about tpi. I know more about carbs. So didn't even feel like trying to diagnosis it. I had a 355 laying around that came out of a truck back in my. Mud bog days so I know nothing about it. Was told freshly rebuilt. I took a can if primer spray paint and primed the car and then a can of color. I could give to ***** what the car looks like. Its not for show its not a strip car. Its just going to be a car to bomb to work in and down gravels to work and go out on county roads and open up just to mess around with no li g trips or anything like that. If UT don't start one day no big deal. IV got a 35000$ truck I'm paying for to get me places and is reliable so that's y I'm setteling with a free edelbrock Carb from a Guy for helping hang drywall. The tranny is a 350 long tail I bought used from a Guy that took it out if an 87 camero to put in a 700 for od. Its got the mount bolted to the tailshaft to hold factory torque arm. He said it used factory.x member and drive shaft. It would bolt right in. Sorry for any spelling or grammer did this all on phone

Okay, that helps.
Most likely it won't matter much what size the Edelbrock carb is. 500, 600, 750, 800, it'll get you down a gravel road.
Only question I have is about the crossmember statement. '82 TH200 would use the same crossmember as a TH350, but an '87 crossmember wouldn't work for the TH350 mount. If you have the crossmember that was in the '87 and mounted to the TH350, you're good to go.

Now u got my worried. All I have is my stock 87 for the 700 he had the 700 in his 87 already. And I just took the tranny to the tranny shop to be looked at and freshened up I called previous builder they said it was a 350th but a interchangable case that it would bolt to several blocks. So your saying it may not work?

It's not a big issue. The "interchangeable case" part is the bellhousing bolt pattern - both Chevy and BOP. I've never seen one with multiple mount locations, but I haven't seen everything there is to see. At least all TH350's are the same here http://www.tciauto.com/tc/trans-dim (the "C" dimension).
The shorter transmissions used a longer crossmember (look under the car at the V-shaped frame members, you'll understand). It's about a 2" difference, so you can weld a tab onto your '87 crossmember to move it where the TH350 belongs.

Cool so I can make it work by welding a tab on it? Hew I went with this tranny to save me from the 1200 bucks for x member torque arm and drive shaft swap. I can Handel a little welding. Ya I have seen tons of the 350 and 400's never seen one with bell housing like this it was new to me to. Atleast I wasn't completely screwed over. And I meanover winter I might build another motor for the car and do body work to it. Just as learning since will be my first time doing either but for now its to save my try k from gravels and low mile runs
