83 z-28 has a v6??? irritated **carb issues
okk so i had put a deposit on a 83 camaro. 2.8l v6 auto. i picked it up today i breifly looked it over a week ago it ran and drove. Soo 700$ was a decent deal nice body and great interior.
Well when i picked it up today and did the title, It was branded 1983 camaro cpe-z28. decoded the vin and its a z28. why would someone put a v6 in a z28. also hood/a few other misc parts arent originals
well anyway its having carb issues. 2.8l/3 speed/ posi
ok new plugs/cap/rotor/air cleaner/vaccum lines
runs great above 1500 rpm. at idle it move from 500-750 rpm. when you go to take off it hessitates/small puff of black smoke. sometimes when you turn it dies. and most of the time starting it petal has to be to the floor.
Please help i need a starting point??? greatly appreciated

It must be time for a carburetor rebuild.
Re: 83 z-28 has a v6??? irritated **carb issues
You sure that VIN is kosher? Nobody puts a V6 into a Z28, unless it's a Grand National motor or something like that.
Might want to double check things with the RPO numbers in the center console- and get some help from the guys on this board who know what they're doing decoding this stuff. Pretty sure they never put a posi in a V6 car throughout the whole run of 3rd gens.
I don't want you to find out later that the VIN and/or the title are not what they are supposed to be. Just saying- better safe than sorry here.

i'd bet that there was a VIN swap somewhere along the lines. does the VIN on the dash match the title? i always- ALWAYS- check that before trading cash for a car. i've had a few people try to give me a title that didn't belong with a car, and i've missed out on some deals because of it.. i don't know where exactly they put them on F bodies, but every car built since the late 60's has a few hidden VINs stamped into various places on the body. if you can find one of them, you can see if it matches the VIN on the dash. if you do find the hidden VIN and it doesn't match the plate on the dash, find a way to have it run thru a stolen car database without them knowing that you've got the car- just say you are thinking about buying a car and you want the VIN checked out. if it comes back clean, don't tell anyone and just enjoy your car..

What Nova said (but said better than I did).
My concern is the same as his- a VIN swap, possibly for extra-legal purposes. Yu don't want to be holding the bag on a stolen car.

The hood doesn't look bad but I am 99% sure that the nose piece is off a V-6 camaro. I think mine was solid and didn't have the slots in it. Other than the V-6 issue it isn't a bad looking car for the price, I would find the 1st 350 and put it back in.. You can also check the wiring harness inside the loom and see if it has been hacked up to shorten it because it went from a 305 to a 2.8
Re: 83 z-28 has a v6??? irritated **carb issues
This car is quite a few years. Yes it did start its life out as a 1983 z28. 2 owners ago they pulled the v8 for a v6 camaro. swapped motors, hoods, bumpers.... and misc. pieces. Im guessing it was because their v6 was a nicer car. But any ways.
someone swapped out carbs. their both varajet II carbs. but this one is the non electronic they put on. should i just rebuild this one. or get an original electronic and rebuild it. I just want it to run good

I would rebuild the non electronic. You don't know what shape the ecu is in. I would also convert it back to v8. I would go with a truck 5.3 Ls. But short term rebuild the carb. My guess is you probably have a bad float or needle and seat sticking open.

speaking of the 5.3l i found a 2004 5.3l vortec with 91k for 600$ has auto trans and transfer case.

you can put any trans that bolts up to any Chevy V8 engine behind a 5.3.. it's just a matter of getting the proper flywheel or flexplate an pilot bearing (if manual trans) for the swap. if you went with something like a 700r4 that has a tv cable, then you'd have to hook it to the carb or throttle body and make sure the geometry was right to prevent burning up the trans.

but the 700r4 isnt it computer controlled?? i want to find the trans that will be the easiest to hook up

only the TCC lock up function is comp controlled, and B&M makes a piggy back unit that can control that for you. if you are located anywhere near IL, I have the nose and ground effects of of an 82-84 Z28 in great condition
