I'm rebuilding a Holley 1850 (600cfm) carb for a friend. Evidently they guy that use to own the truck that this came off of decided to add a little Ultra Blue RTV to the bowl and metering block gaskets before bolting it together. It was a very thin layer but still some of it oozed out to the passages partially blocking them. It's no wonder why they were having problems with this carb.
Just a word of warning, do yourself a favor and get the right gaskets first before you open anything up and don't try to use RTV as an added sealing measure. You might just seal something up that wasn't meant to be sealed.

Agreed. They go together DRY, just gaskets.
Applies to all makes and models of carbs I've ever worked on.

First car I ever bought, first time I rebuilt the carb (basically the 1st weekend I owned it), I made that mistake.
Never again.
Fortunately lacquer thinner softens it up even more than gasoline does, and gets it right out of everything.
You can use silicone spray lube on gaskets to help em not stick; maybe a SUPER THIN coating of grease. Definitely NO SEALER though.

I just buy the non-stick gaskets (Holley) and that works great for me.Originally Posted by sofakingdom
