Non CCC with original disty

Hi all.

I know for a fact that the carb in my TA is not CCC, in fact it's from an Australian V8 from '79 (Torana I think). Anyway AFAIK it works fine. Car starts well and seems to drive ok. BUT, it doesn't look like the disty was changed and is still the computer controlled one.

So, is this combination useless and if so I guess it's the disty that needs to be changed to the vacumn type? The car computer is still in, but I have no idea what sensors are remaining, and I can't locate the ADLC under the dash (might be well hidden due to RHD).

cheers.

The cc dist requires the ccc and ecm to advance timing. It does not have any mech advance, so your timing will remain static. It will run ok, but will lack a ton of power and use heaps of fuel.

So best to remove it and drop in a vacuum advance distributor? And basically ditch the ecm?

Yep, since the ecm is basically ballast already. Or even better would be to find a cc qjet and put it back to stock; the factory carb system seems to be very well regarded around here (TGO). Over here though (Australia), it's a pretty hard task to find one.

What carb have you got - non cc qjet?

Its a Rochester quadjet. 17059596 2401 CXL.
That's the part number.
If i was to try and find a ccc, what connections/sensors does it need?

Never seen one in the flesh myself, but as I understand it the mcs and tps are bolted onto the carb, and should come with any replacement you might find. Sounds like you've got the rest of the system already - ecm, wiring, temp & o2 sensors etc, so I guess you'd just need to source the carb itself.

A replacement cc qjet would cost more than a new vac dist, up to you which way to go.

Wouldn't mind changing to this system myself from my current Holley, but have none of the parts at all.

Check out Cliff's High Performance. He sells and re-builds Qjets. He rebuilt mine though you're looking at about $380 (my price 4 years ago). Runs like a champ now. He'll go over alot of things with you such as Cam, intake, rear end etc to help build your carb to your vehicle. Then when you get it, all yu need is a fine tune and away you go.

Cool! Is that Cliff as in Cliff Ruggles? This is a project I might get going on next year, after my exhaust is done (if it ever is - so little time ).

Sorry for jumping all over your thread djjon76; at least this qjet stuff is relevant for you too

Yup, Cliff Ruggles. He knows his stuff! When I called his shop, I found myself talking to him directly. He asked, so I started explaining what was happening. He inturrupted me, and started explaining it to me, everything that my car was doing, before I even finished.
