I have it at 550-600 in Drive holding on brake. And 750rpm in Park. Is this right?

I don't know what specific RPM your idle speed is supposed to be set at. It's typically found on the emissions sticker found under the hood. If the sticker is missing, most any service manual should have this spec in the tune-up section.

The idle speed on GM cars with automatic transmissions have always been set with the transmission in "drive" and the engine at operating temperature to ensure that the choke is fully open. Once it is set in drive, it doesn't matter what the idle speed is in Park (provided the carburetor isn't jacked up).

If the carb has an idle speed solenoid, then there are two settings for the idle; one with the solenoid unplugged, another with the solenoid plugged in.
