Thought I had my cold start issues solved

After reading many posts and trying to find out why my '83 Z28 with 4bbl qq jet runs so bad when the engine is cold... I saw one of Sonix's threads saying it was probably the choke... so I adjusted the leaf spring screw in a few turns and YES!! Started right up and didn't die like usual! All good, right?

Well, she seemed to run ok, but was idling around 1500-2000, and would not "kick down" too easily, but eventually did, at which time idle went to 500-750 and was rough.

So like an idiot, I fooled around with the screw again, turning it out 2 turns. Then it started, and idle kicked down quickly, to 500 rpm... ran real rough though, and died. After further "screwing" with the screw, now won't start at all! Crap! I will try again tomorrow night when I have a fresh {cold} start. Any pointers or advice?

BTW, thanks Sonix, your posts on choke stuff helped a lot! I may figure this out yet!

I believe I also have to set the dwell and timing- I will do those next...

UPDATE_

So I tweaked it. starts immediately, and idles at around 2500-3000.

After about 3 mins., check engine light comes on. I gotta figure that one out...

A few minutes later, I hit the throttle and it kicked down.. to around 750-1000, and runs rough.

Upon restart, it starts right up but idles low and rough...
