I have a 89 Camaro with a edelbrock high rise intake, edelbrock 1405 carb, and a mild rv cam , my problem is that the car drives great but if I go full throttle from an idle I get a backfire out the carb and most times stalls and I have to restart it, base timing is at 8 degrees I have tuned it to the point it runs great, launches great,(if I feather it's slightly before going full throttle) but if I go any Richer it backfires way worse, I have it in what you could call the "middle ground", I don't know what to do I was going to set the timing to 10 degree but the car starts right up after a few foot pump so I doubt its timing related. Please help

How the car starts does not equate to how the timing affects anything else but starting.
What engine is in the car?
What is your total timing?
Are you running vac advance?
Do you know your advance rate?
What tuning have you done to the carb?

 

It has a 350 , I am running vac advance I just replaced it do to not keeping vacuum, I replaced the timing curve springs in the distributed , I used the same size springs as it had in it before(the medium size spring) and I don't know what my total timing is , and I adjusted the air mixture screws and the diaphragm

 

You should figure out what your total timing is but you are going lean and you need to fix that.

Make sure your accelerator pump is squirting and try moving the arm to a lower hole. After that measure idle vac and change the rod springs. You may need to change rods or jets but those are the simple things to try.
