86 EGR solenoid replacement
figured i would post here to get more input from the carb guys. im troubleshooting a code 53 on my car. i verified the vacuum source so im turning to the EGR solenoid. i have searched for 3 days to find a replacement but found out they were discontinued long ago.
another member had the same issue and used a solenoid from a 95 Cadillac DeVille and a pigtail connector for an LT1. problem is his car was an 88 GTA Tuned Port and im not sure if this will work on the older LG4s? heres what he got

would this still work on my car? no, im not just gonna ignore the SES light as it bugs me and i want to keep it off. maintaining my cars is what i do best

Re: 86 EGR solenoid replacement
first, I'm not confident that replacing the solenoid will solve your SES. I ran my 87 and 85 LG4's for years with no EGR and no SES. both have/had vortec heads with no provision for EGR.
that said, I see no reason why that solenoid would not work. It's simply an electrically operated on/off vacuum switch.

Re: 86 EGR solenoid replacement
have you tested the solenoid? applied voltage to it and verified its operation/non-operation?

Re: 86 EGR solenoid replacement
no i didnt test it i just thought it was bad since the code was for over voltage or weak vacuum. do i just apply 12v and listen for a click and try to blow through? im assuming when 12v is applied the valve opens to allow the vacuum. and its normally closed. right?
i think the ECM cant see the EGR actually working, as long as the solenoid is working the SES will stay off. i read that on another thread

Re: 86 EGR solenoid replacement
sure just put 12V to it.
I have read the same stuff, BUT the SES code never tripped with my EGR solenoid disconnected on my 85 and 87 LG4s. Thousands of miles (still driving the 85 occasionally but the 87 is now Fitech). So I don't believe it, in fact I'm not sure how the ECM would even know if the solenoid were connected, it only provides a ground signal.
it could trip EGR codes when some other condition suggests that the EGR is not functioning though. EGR operates primarily at cruise, under light throttle and high vacuum.
the only vacuum signal the ECM gets is from the vac sensor.

Re: 86 EGR solenoid replacement
wait, the solenoid may be a 5V (engine control voltage piece). Doubt it but I need to double check.

Re: 86 EGR solenoid replacement
wiring diagram shows it powered off of the eng control fuse, 12V. grounded by the ECM.

if you can wait a few days, I can check one of mine and see how it works. might have a spare I can send you.

Re: 86 EGR solenoid replacement
so i went with the Standard Motor VS25 solenoid and the LT1 connector installed on the car. the engine still runs like before. i still have to take her on a trip to see if it fixed the SES 53 code. i soldered the wires on PNK wire went to + and the GRY went to -
