Hey guys, I'm new here. Just plopped a 383 into my 87 Trans Am and am having a bit of an issue getting her to run. I'm thinking the issue is the fuel pump (mechanical) that was given to me by a friend but has no marking or anything. Here's the issue; it runs fine as long as someone is dumping gas down the carb (A Holley Street Demon 650CFM). Also, any suggestions for a replacement? I want it to be a daily driver that i can take to the strip every now and again. I was thinking a Holley 4160 750 CFM for the carb, and an Edelbrock 1721 for the fuel pump. Thanks in advance for the help!

Did you verify fuel flow by removing the line and filling a bucket while the car cranks? What did you do to modify the fuel pump pick up?
That is a good fuel pump but I would verify you dont have another issue before spending

I can verify fuel flow, but it seems to be very minimal. I have plenty of gas in the tank, and never had an issue until I got this engine in. the pump seems to just be dribbling fuel into the carb, even at WOT while cranking.

Take the fuel line right off of the carb and have a buddy point the thing into a bottle while cranking it over. Having your foot at wide open throttle is for clearing a flood, and will do nothing additional for diagnosing a fuel delivery problem.
I've got the new fuel pump and carb on. Looks good, can verify fuel flow now. Now I just need to learn how to properly tune a carb :/ Still new to things here and damn I'm confused

Vacuum gauge and A/F meter are your friend. Other than that read the manual Originally Posted by 383addict

How are you getting fuel from the tank? Did you modify the tank?
