The carb is absolutely the worst place to start. That CC q-jet is a good piece, and has advantages that no "new" carb can match.
You really need to address your "future mods" first. Add to your list ignition coil & module, air cleaner, perhaps heads (at least porting work). Then you can consider intake.
But, if properly tuned, the carb is NOT holding you back. If you don't believe me, come by some time and I'll show you what a 1986 LG4 computer controlled q-jet can do!

Actually, I was talking about a dual snorkel air cleaner. K&N's flow okay, but don't filter out dirt any better than a paper filter. The K&N filtering top requires some space between the air cleaner and hood, which we simply don't have. Open element air cleaners cause the engine to injest warm air, not good from a power perspective, and also the lack of the snorkel makes cold driving a challenge as well.

ok, i am not really big on the dual snorkel idea because i dont really wana be cuttin up airboxes. have you gone to the site that is up top ram air for f-body's or w/e they have one i can mount right on. how would that perform. also i thought about building one out of some of that flexible piping kind of stuff and making a big intake under the front valance kind of thing and running it straight to the air box. i would try to draw a picture but if you dont understand that my picture probably wouldn't help well what the hell. i will go make on and post it in a lil bit
